BHA and BHT

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytulene) and BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

The FDA claims that BHT and BHA are safe for human consumption in small amounts. But let’s face it, on average, we don’t eat small amounts as Americans. We love super size, seconds, buffets, and Costco. Even the most portion controlled eater, should still be well informed about this popular food additive because, why would anyone want the following inside of their body?

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytulene) and BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) are both chemically made preservatives, used in products containing fats and oils, to prevent the product from becoming rancid- going bad.

Research suggests that both BHA and BHT are potential carcinogens, cancer causers, and endocrine (hormone) disrupters, because they mimic the hormonal actions of estrogen. All our hormones effect one other, it’s like a domino effect, if one starts to fall short, the others may soon be off as well. Your sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone), your stress hormones (adrenal glands such as adrenal) and your metabolism hormones (thyroid gland with hormones ghrelin and leptin regulating hunger and appetite ), just to name a few, are all connected. It’s amazing the depth that nutrition can really go to alter or benefit our bodies. It’s so important to be well informed!

Further, BHT and BHA have even been labeled as potential carcinogen’s (cancer causers) by The World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Both BHT and BHA are toxic and hard on your liver to metabolize. Your liver is your primary detox organ, the first organ to help take a substance in your body and either metabolize it for your body’s benefit or excrete it. If your liver can not metabolize a chemical or nutrient you’ve consumed, then it can store up in your body leading to further degeneration of your healthy cells, which can eventually lead to diet-related disease.

Common foods that can contain BHA and BHT include; cereals, breads, crackers, snack foods, gum, pet food, make-up, lotions and soap to name a few.

It’s good to remember that what we put on our body daily is just as important as what we consume daily.

How many products in your pantry, refrigerator, medicine cabinet, shower and make-up drawer have these “preservatives” in them?
