Vinegar for Optimal Digestion
I am a big fan of vinegar! Specifically, drinking vinegar. It has has become a daily staple for me. It’s a great way for me to stay hydrated because it helps me drink more water throughout the day. I add drinking vinegar to water or sparkling water to add a touch of healthy natural flavor, which makes drinking water more exciting!!
Today I share 3 health benefits of drinking vinegar that are tied to digestion; energy levels, cleansing and detoxing as well as weight management.
Our energy levels are directly related to the health of our digestion system. An efficient digestion system helps to keep our energy levels soaring, as we easily metabolize and utilize nutrients, which give us energy, from our food. Digestion itself requires your body to work and expend energy. So if your digestion is sluggish, you too can feel, sluggish and low in energy. One reason for poor digestion is a lack of sufficient acidity within the stomach. Drinking vinegar is an acidic food, helping to increase stomach acidity and improve digestion. Drinking vinegar also contains B-vitamins, which are essential for energy, digestion and optimal metabolism. A common recommendation is to drink drinking vinegar prior to meal to improve digestion, which in turn helps to improve energy levels.
CLEANSING AND DETOXIFYING
Vinegar is rich in vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that support blood circulation and optimal liver function. Your liver is your main detox organ, which helps to filter and excrete harmful toxins, metals and pesticides from the body that we are exposed to on a daily basis.Drinking vinegar supports detoxification by cleansing the body’s lymph nodes to allow for better lymph circulation. A healthy lymphatic system is vital for breaking up mucus in the body, removing toxins from the cells within the body, and strengthening the immune system.
When our body becomes overloaded with toxins, from years of processed food, working in toxic environments and chronic stress, we can reach a “toxic overload” and it is hard for our liver to keep up, and we then may see a decline in our health. Often first with symptoms of poor digestion, low energy, acne and poor skin. A heavy toxic load can eventually wear on the body increasing the risk of inflammation and degenerative diseases such a cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. Although vinegar is helpful for detoxification and reducing the risk of disease, it is most beneficial to the body when combined with an organic and natural foods diet as well as an active lifestyle.
WEIGHT LOSS / WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Drinking vinegar before a meal has been said to help reduce appetite and improve satiety (satisfaction) with your meal, so you will eat less, and overtime this may help you to weigh less. The reason for this is because vinegar contains a nutrient known as acetic acid, which has been said to lower the glycemic index of foods, and therefore nutrients such a carbohydrates enter the bloodstream more slowly, helping to control blood sugar levels and contribute to a greater sense of fullness after a meal. Satiety is important for supporting weight loss efforts by helping to manage portion control.
Vinegar has also been known to stimulate and improve digestion due to its acidic nature. A recommended serving size is 2 tablespoons of drinking vinegar mixed with water daily, best first thing the morning or before a meal, in partnership with an overall healthy diet, exercise and reducing stress. While there is no magic pill for weight loss, there are many healthy steps and super foods, such a drinking vinegar, that you can incorporate into your lifestyle to improve your body’s optimal function, which in turn helps with digestion, weight management, energy and overall health.
