Hey Natural Beauty!
I’m going to be honest… most days I don’t wear makeup. If you follow me on Instagram and watch my stories you’ll see that I show up just as I am, every day – bare face and all! As a stay-at-home and work-from-home mom the days go by fast – so I spend as little time getting ready as possible. Yet part of my job is being on camera (as a video host for our own content, our video clients and the occasion television segment)… so when I need to look flawless fast my go-to makeup is …. Beauty Counter!
I’m not a makeup artist and I don’t obsess over the latest makeup trends. What I do love is simple, classic beauty products that work! I also care about cleaner beauty products. Why? I mentioned in my Natural Skincare Journey Story here that I’ve been interested in green beauty for over a decade. Before the beauty bloggers and YouTubers, I was spending hours in the aisles of Whole Foods Market exploring and testing out the crunchy, natural options available at that time. We have come A LONG way my friends with beauty products that are better for us and perform better too! My infertility journey as well as my autoimmune disease diagnosis (which I was able to put into remission naturally!) was a turning point for me to dive deeper in the world of all things natural from beauty, personal care, home products, even my candles got a makeover… see ya later artificial fragrance!
Why Does Cleaner Beauty Matter?
There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don’t have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry. What’s worse is that the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics in the United States) does not have the authority to remove harmful ingredients from the products we put on our bodies and on our kids’ bodies every single day, day after day.
A Better Beauty Brand…
Beauty Counter is committed to health and safety. They created The Never List™ which is made up of more than 1,800 questionable or harmful chemicals that are never used in their products. This includes the over 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in personal care products by the European Union, plus additional chemicals screened by Beauty Counter and found to be of concern.
For example, did you know that Formaldehyde is used as a preservative in some cosmetics as well as shampoo, bubble bath and body wash? Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that is also linked to asthma, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. It may appear in your ingredient list as: quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3 diol (Bronopol).
Another common beauty offender is Parabens. Parabens are commonly found in shampoo, face cleanser, body wash, body lotion, foundation and the list goes on. They are a class of preservatives commonly used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. However, Parabens are a known endocrine (or hormone) disruptor, which may alter important hormone mechanisms in our body.
These are just two of many ingredients that show up on products we use every. single. day. Unless you make the swap to cleaner, better products! I have shared four natural products I love and use on the regular here! Beyond these fab four items, Beauty Counter has become a staple for me.
I Was Skeptical, Then I Was Hooked
As a blogger, YouTuber and Registered Dietitian I try out a lot of products. When I first learned about Beauty Counter I was wasn’t sure if it’d live up to the hype, but I couldn’t stop seeing gals I know talk about their SPF and makeup and more. So I placed an order, with my first purchase being the Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Mist SPF 30. I wanted one SPF that the whole family could use and the ingredients were clean enough for even my toddler. My review – I love it! This SPF is reef friendly, made with non-nano zinc oxide, sprays and rubs in easily. From there, I tried some Beauty Counter makeup, skincare and… I was hooked.
