Today I’m sharing 10 Healthy Holiday Swaps! At Healthy Grocery Girl our mission to help you enjoy more real, whole natural foods. There is always room for a treat, especially during the Holidays. However, for some you may still want or need to eat a specific or cleaner diet even during the Holidays based on your health status. So today’s video is for you! These swaps are more nutrient dense options that will simply provide your body with more vitamins, minerals and overall nutrition.

Swap White Flour for Baking For Almond or Coconut Flour

Holiday cookies are part of the Holiday fun! However, white flour has the endosperm removed including the wheat bran which also removes all the nutrition! A great swap is Almond flour which is higher in protein, manganese, vitamin E and fiber than white flour! Now you can have your cookie and eat it too! 

Swap White Sugar For Coconut Sugar

Similar to white flour, white sugar is void of nutrition. Swap white sugar for… Coconut sugar which contains minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium and potassium. While it’s still sugar, coconut sugar it’s often considered a healthier sugar alternative, due do these minerals. 

Swap Candied Yams For Candied Yams with Tessemae’s Honey BBQ Sauce

Honey BBQ Candied Yams

Ingredients
  1. 2 medium sweet potatoes
  2. 1/2 cup Tessemae's Honey BBQ
  3. 1 tablespoon sliced green onion
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice into rounds about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Toss rounds in Tessemae's Honey BBQ Sauce and place in baking dish.
  4. Bake for about 35 minutes in the oven. Optional, cover baking dish with foil for the first 20 minutes while baking, this will help the sauce from browning as much.

Swap Semolina Noodles For Zucchini Noodles

Is Christmas Eve Lasagna a tradition in your house too? No? Maybe this is the year to start! Traditional pasta can be void of fiber and low in protein. Legume based pastas are high in protein and fiber. Even zucchini thinly sliced is a fantastic lasagna noodle option! Zucchini is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and fiber! 

Swap White Potato For Sweet Potato 

A creamy white potato is delicious! Yet if you’re wanting a sweet spud that packs a little more nutrition… Go for sweet potatoes! A medium sweet potato has approximately 100 calories, 4 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein! Did you know that 1 medium sweet potato also has 65% of your recommended daily value of vitamin C?

Swap Deviled Eggs Appetizer with Processed Mayonnaise For Tessemae’s Mayonnaise

Ingredients
  1. 6 hard boiled eggs
  2. 1/4 cup Tessemae's Organic Mayonnaise
  3. 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  4. 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  5. Pinch sea salt
  6. Pinch chili powder blend
Instructions
  1. Shell the hard boiled eggs and slice in half lengthwise.
  2. Pop the yolks into a small bowl and add the mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard and a pinch of sea salt.
  3. Mash and stir together.
  4. Pipe or scoop the yolk-mash into the egg white halves.
  5. Top with a sprinkle of chili powder, enjoy!

Candy is a fun treat! But do you know what’s just as sweet but also contains fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals? Unsweetened dried fruit! Think dried apricots, dates, prunes, dried apple and more!

Swap Vegetable Oil For Coconut Oil

Most vegetables oils are refined, processed, it may be genetically modified or contain hydrogenated oils known as trans fats. Vegetable oils can also have a low smoke point which when heated beyond a certain temperature the oil may become rancid and have less nutritional value. Coconut oil has a high smoke point which when heated better retains nutrition. Worried about Saturated Fats? The medium chain triglycerides in coconut are known to digest slowly, be a source of energy and also support heart health in-part of a balanced plant-focused diet. 

Swap Dairy In Potatoes For Potatoes With Tessemae’s Ranch Dressing

Ingredients
  1. 2 pounds russet potatoes
  2. Pinch of sea salt
  3. 1 bottle Tessemae's Classic Ranch Dressing & Marinade
Instructions
  1. Peel and chop the potatoes.
  2. Add to a large pot with cold water and a heavy pinch of sea salt; bring to a boil.
  3. Cook until tender, about 15 minutes then drain.
  4. Add half the bottle of ranch dressing and mash potatoes.
  5. Using a strong wooden spoon finish mashing and stirring the potatoes; adding more ranch if needed. When I make this I usually use 3/4 of the bottle.
