Avocado Hemp Date Shake

Summer time means warmer weather and cooler drinks! Hello smoothies! I love smoothies, they are the perfect way to blend up a variety of healthy ingredients for a quick meal that is oh-so-good for you!

Unfortunately one common frustration I often hear from my clients is that smoothies are not filling or satisfying. Please, let me introduce you to my newest summer smoothie creation. The ingredients you choose are key to making a nutritionally balanced smoothie that is both delicious and healthy.

Avocado Meets Hemp Date Shake

Creamy Avocado and Hemp Date Shake copy

Serves: One 16-ounce smoothie

Ingredients:

1/2 avocado

2 pitted medjool dates

1 tablespoon chia seeds

1 cup Pacific Natural Foods Unsweetened Hemp Milk

1 cup Organic Coconut Water *Preferably fresh!

1 pinch of sea salt

3 ice cubes

Directions:

Blend and enjoy!

Why Non-Dairy Milk?

Did you know that it is National Non-Dairy Month?! Hooray! You may be wondering, why non-dairy milk instead of regular cow’s milk? Here’s the scoop- Traditional cow’s milk is notoriously polluted with antibiotics, growth hormones and other harmful ingredient inhibitors. Although ORGANIC milk is a healthier choice than non-organic milk, one is stilling consuming an animal based food. Why does this matter? Animal foods and animal by-products (cheese, milk) promote an acidic environment within the body. An acidic body is more prone to inflammation, degenerative diseases and speeding up the aging process. If you are thinking “If I don’t drink Milk, where do I get my protein and calcium?” this is a common and valid concern. The truth is that there are MANY natural nourishing plant based foods that are good sources of calcium and protein. Most non-dairy milks are also fortified with as much calcium as you would regularly find in milk.

Will It Taste the Same?

No 🙂 That’s because they are different. Non-dairy milks will have a similar texture, consistency and look to cow’s milk however. Non-dairy milk does taste good though!! However if you are new to the party, it can take weeks to develop new taste buds and appreciation to ANY new food. So if you try one non-dairy milk, and it’s not for you, don’t give up! You may not like drinking a glass of non-dairy milk but you may love it in smoothies, on cereal or in your coffee. Also try different types of non-dairy milk. You may be a hemp milk super fan and rice milk is so not your thing. That’s ok! Give it a try, and be patient. Healthier new habits take time to develop for EVERYONE! I see it ALL THE TIME with my clients. When people eliminate dairy from their diet, the results are so often that their skin improves, their digestion improves, their energy levels increase and they even lose weight.
