I became a vegetarian for health reasons. Both of my parents were type 2 diabetic, had high blood pressure and died way to young. My cholesterol was high in my 20s and my doctor was thinking about putting me on statins, but then she suggested I try a vegetarian diet (lucky for me my doctor was a vegetarian). I already loved vegetables, a big salad has always been my favorite meal since I was a teenager so it was pretty easy to transition away from meat. I ended up losing some weight and my cholesterol dropped into the healthy range. My blood pressure and blood sugar are great and I’m not on any medications even though I have younger brothers on statins and high blood pressure medicine. I am sure a healthy diet and exercise have saved me from years of medication.
